Creative Artists Agency (CAA) announced today that it has signed director Joshua Caldwell. The news coincides with opening of his new film “Be Somebody,” starring Viner Matthew Espinosa, which Paramount is releasing today in ten theaters in the U.S. and on demand and digital HD.
Caldwell, 32, won an MTV Movie Award in 2006 for his film “The Beautiful Lie,” which he wrote, directed and produced while still a student at Fordham Unversity. His first feature, “Layover,” made for just $6,000, premiered at the 2014 Seattle International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the New American Cinema Award. He went on to develop online projects for “CSI” creator Anthony E. Zuiker, including “Cybergeddon” (Yahoo), and direct the eight-episode Hulu series “South Beach.”
Matthew Espinosa, the star of my film BE SOMEBODY, and the film were featured on THE TODAY SHOW this morning with Kathy Lee and Hoda!
MarVista Entertainment, a privately held, fully integrated production studio that creates some of the most widely seen independent films and entertainment in the world across every platform and in every genre, will finance and produce the new thriller Negative from director Joshua Caldwell.
Negative is set in the American southwest and follows Natalie, a former British spy who flees Los Angeles for Phoenix after a deal with a cartel goes wrong. She’s joined by Hollis, a street photographer who has put his life at risk by taking Natalie’s photo at the wrong time and in the wrong place.
Katia Winter of Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” stars as Natalie, alongside Simon Quarterman (“Westworld”) as Hollis. Negative also stars Sebastian Roche (“Vampire Diaries”) as Rodney, a mysterious former partner of Natalie’s who lives in Phoenix. Negative is written by Adam Gaines (“The Bridge”) and produced by William Borthwick (Estranged).
Caldwell is represented by Tom Spriggs of The Coronel Group, and the production deal was negotiated by Matthew Wallerstein and MarVista’s Stephanie Slack.
Negative began production in November and is slated to wrap in May.
Studio71, the media studio and multi-channel network of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group, has signed a multi-picture distribution deal with Paramount’s Worldwide Television Licensing & Distribution and Acquisitions division for films from the studio’s stable of top digital influencers.
The first project to be released under the agreement is Be Somebody, the Joshua Caldwell-helmed pic toplined by Vine star Matthew Espinosa which will hit select theaters and digital and VOD platforms June 10.
